ReadinessHub.com Emergency Situation Procedure Checklist The First Five steps you should take when an Emergency strikes: 1. Do not panic. Losing your cool when an emergency occurs does no one any good. Rational thought is best used when emotions are kept out of any vital decision making process. 2. Assess the situation. Gather as much information about the emergency as possible from any reliable source: news, radio, television, or emergency alert system. If anyone is injured, immediately administer First-Aid using a First-Aid quick reference guide. 3. Determine safest location. If you feel your home, or current location at the time of the emergency is not safe, seek shelter elsewhere. Local, state and federal Emergency Management Agencies (FEMA, SEMA, etc) will often initiate localized shelters. If you do not feel safe in your current location, and feel you can swiftly and safely make the trip to the nearest shelter, do so. Make sure to Prioritize your Resources to bring along in case of shortages at your new destination (the more you bring the better, but if you must go on foot then what you can bring with each person is extremely limited). 4. Prioritize Resources. Obviously food and water come first. However, it is important not to forget about such things as available medical supplies and any other items required for comfort and health. 5. Determine a course of action. If the situation is worsening, consider the consequences of staying where you currently are. Think about resource consumption and how long you can effectively maintain your current location. It is advisable to be as self-reliant as possible. Use a mixture of instinct, reasoning and an overall sense of survival to make your decisions.
